Palin Claims VP Is In Charge of the Senate
Someone better send Sarah Palin a copy of Schoolhouse Rock. It looks like she needs a little review of the Constitution:
Q: [Third grader] Brandon Garcia wants to know, “What does the Vice President do?”
PALIN: That’s something that Piper would ask me! … [T]hey’re in charge of the U.S. Senate so if they want to they can really get in there with the senators and make a lot of good policy changes that will make life better for Brandon and his family and his classroom.
Of course, the Vice President doesn’t “get in there with the senators and make a lot of good policy changes.” In fact, Article I of the Constitution clearly limits the Vice President to only voting in the Senate for the purposes of breaking a tie. As a result, the U.S. Senate Historical Office explains that modern Vice Presidents preside over the Senate “only on ceremonial occasions.” ThinkProgress spoke to Senior Assistant Parliamentarian Peter Robinson, who confirmed that it is the Majority and Minority leaders who control the Senate, not the Vice President.
Are we really going to elect a Vice President who just lost “Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader?”
[...] paid off a guy accused of voter registration fraud, was endorsed by al-Qaeda, discovered that Sarah Palin doesn’t know the Constitution, and pissed off Virginians. [...]
