Abortion Provider Murdered at Church
There really are no words:
WICHITA, Kan. — George Tiller, a Wichita doctor who was one of the few doctors in the nation to perform late-term abortions, was shot to death on Sunday as he attended church, city officials in Wichita said.
Authorities in Wichita Johnson County are believed to have a suspect in custody. Condolences to the Tiller family and friends.

Tysons Metro Crews Dig Up Secret Government Cable
As if the Tysons Corner/Reston/Dulles Metro project didn’t have enough red tape, construction crews have just discovered that there’s one utility cable in particular that they really don’t want to hit:
This part happens all the time: A construction crew putting up an office building in the heart of Tysons Corner a few years ago hit a fiber optic cable no one knew was there.
This part doesn’t: Within moments, three black sport-utility vehicles drove up, a half-dozen men in suits jumped out and one said, “You just hit our line.”
Whose line, you may ask? The guys in suits didn’t say, recalled Aaron Georgelas, whose company, the Georgelas Group, was developing the Greensboro Corporate Center on Spring Hill Road. But Georgelas assumed that he was dealing with the federal government and that the cable in question was “black” wire — a secure communications line used for some of the nation’s most secretive intelligence-gathering operations.
…
Black wire is one of the looming perils of the massive construction that has come to Tysons, where miles and miles of secure lines are thought to serve such nearby agencies as the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the National Counterterrorism Center and, a few miles away in McLean, the Central Intelligence Agency. After decades spent cutting through red tape to begin work on a Metrorail extension and the widening of the Capital Beltway, crews are now stirring up tons of dirt where the black lines are located.

Donuts Destroy County Sewers
- They aren’t just bad for your arteries. Fairfax County officials say that “excess fats, oils and grease” from a local Krispy Kreme plant have damaged parts of the country sewer system. (The Washington Post)
- When asked whether he would discourage Republicans from calling Sonia Sotomayor a racist, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said he has “better things to do.” Nice. (Think Progress)
- Gen. David Petraeus agrees with the Obama Administration’s decision to close Gitmo. He noted that closure of the prison will show the world that the United States is committed to observing the Geneva Convention. (Radio Free Europe)
- Yesterday was date night for the Obamas. The President whisked Michelle off to New York for dinner and a show, and then maybe the Leader of the Free World got lucky, hm? (CNN Political Ticker)

A Question for Michael Steele
Is “slammin’ and rammin’” really the only phrase you could come up with to describe what many Republicans are doing to Sonia Sotomayor?

Deep Thought
When will the GOPers ask for Sonia Sotomayor’s birth certificate? Sure, she says she was born in New York, but how can we be sure?

Penna. Newspaper Should Have Hired a History Major
Well I was starting to worry that maybe I wouldn’t get a job after college, but worry no more! Clearly the nation needs more history majors:
A Pennsylvania newspaper is apologizing for running an ad calling for the assassination of President Obama.
In the Thursday edition of The Warren Times Observer, the paper ran a personal ad that read, “May Obama follow in the steps of Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley, and Kennedy.” Each of those presidents was assassinated.
The publisher of the paper told the Associated Press that the paper didn’t originally realize the meaning of the ad, and the Times Observer apologized for the oversight in Friday’s edition.
The Secret Service is reportedly investigating the incident.

Liddy: “Let’s Hope That The Key Conferences Aren’t When She’s Menstruating”
Well, let’s be honest. It was only a matter of time before conservatives got tired of insulting Sonia Sotomayor for being Hispanic. Fortunately for them, conservative pundit convicted felon G. Gordon Liddy has found something new for them to pick on: her gender!
Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
LIDDY: I understand that they found out today that Miss Sotomayor is a member of La Raza, which means in illegal alien, “the race.” [ed.: Nope] And that should not surprise anyone because she’s already on record with a number of racist comments.
…
LIDDY: Let’s hope that the key conferences aren’t when she’s menstruating or something, or just before she’s going to menstruate. That would really be bad. Lord knows what we would get then.
And as if calling the Spanish language “illegal alien” and insinuating that women are incapable of making decisions because they menstruate wasn’t bad enough, Liddy then had this to say about the composition of the highest court in the land:
LIDDY: And everybody is cheering because Hispanics and females have been, quote, underrepresented, unquote. And as you pointed out, which I thought was quite insightful, the Supreme Court is not designed to be and should not be a representative body.
Yes, what problem could anyone possibly have with nine white men making decisions for a country which is not primarily made up of white men?
As John Cornyn demonstrated earlier today, Republican lawmakers–i.e. the people who actually have a say in Sotomayor’s confirmation–are trying to distance themselves from nutbars like Liddy, El Rushbo, and Tom Tancredo. Still, I hope the GOPers who are attacking her based solely on her race and/or gender stay on the TV and radio for the next day. Should be able to get a few good clips for Democratic campaign ads in 2010 and beyond. Let’s see if the GOP can win elections without women or Latinos.

Update: Wonkette lady-editor, Sara K. Smith:
Ha ha, joke’s on him! At age 54, Sotomayor is probably very close to, or past, menopause. SEXISM PROBLEM SOLVED.

Dick Cheney’s Pants on Fire
- Sen. Carl Levin is putting a stop to Dick Cheney’s cross-country speaking tour in defense of torture. Levin said Cheney “bore false witness” when he claimed that the “enhanced interrogation” techniques approved by the Bush administration were not torture. (TPMDC)
- Thanks to Amazon.com, you too can now see what it’s like to be a kidnapper! Amazon is selling “Stockholm,” a video game in which you use physical, sexual, and psychological abuse to convince your captive to “love” you. (Feministing)
- According to a new poll, Americans approve of President Obama’s nomination of Sonia Sotomayor by a 2-1 margin. When will Rush denounce two-thirds of Americans as “reverse racists?” (Quinnipiac University Polling Institute)

Ex-Presidents Can’t Fill Auditorium
Poor George W. Bush and Bill Clinton! Now that we have a black president, it seems that nobody cares about our white ex-presidents:
David Bester is a man willing to go to great lengths for a spectacular show. Indie rock band The Hold Steady is worth it, he says. U.S. Presidents numbers 42 and 43 are not.
So he’s selling the two tickets he purchased to tomorrow afternoon’s “conversation” between George W. Bush and Bill Clinton at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre for less than their $189 face value.
…
Organizer Christian Darbyshire yesterday said “400 or 500″ tickets were still available from a total of 6,000.A call to the ticket hotline confirmed that general admission tickets are still available at $229, but anyone willing to ask around can probably get their hands on discounted seats.
Ryerson alumni recently received an unsolicited e-mail offering tickets for $189, as did other organizations, after the company co-ordinating the event, Power Within, hawked a discount offer in a bid to extend publicity.
Why is Canada being such a “reverse racist” by not spending just 200 CanadaBucks on our former Leaders of the Free World, who could barely put together gas money for the drive up to Toronto because of the recession and/or socialism?
