Breaking: Sen. Mel Martinez Resigns
We already knew that Sen. Mel Martinez (R-FL) was planning to retire at the end of his term, but, according to GOP sources, Martinez will announce that he is planning on leaving the Senate early. One report suggests that he may not even return to the Senate after the current August recess.
This puts Gov. Charlie Crist, who is in the middle of a heated Republican primary to replace Martinez, in the potentially awkward position of having to appoint a replacement to serve out the rest of Martinez’s term.
