Shorter Nouri al-Maliki
Iraqi leader meets Obama, calls for U.S. troops out by end of 2010
“Hey McCain campaign, translate this!”
McCain: Maliki Doesn’t Really Want Timetables
A couple weeks ago, Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki said he wants to negotiate a timeline for the withdrawal of American troops, a position that puts him in agreement with Barack Obama’s plan for phased withdrawal from Iraq. The Bush Administration has even agreed to “time horizons”–which are apparently not the same as timetables even though they accomplish essentially the same thing–leaving John McCain as the only person who wants us to stay in Iraq. And what do Republicans do when they’re backed into a lonely corner on an unpopular issue?
In a conference called just now with reporters, McCain foreign policy adviser Randy Scheunemann responded to a question about Malik’s comments by citing “the reaction from the Iraqi government, which made it clear that there were apparently some translation problems in the quote, that’s not the position of the prime minister.”
“I certainly can’t believe that the Obama campaign would take a quote that’s already been clarified out of context, and try to hang their Iraq policy on that,” Scheunemann later added.
Of course, the NYT has independently verified Maliki’s comments, but the McCain campaign’s Iraq strategy still seems to be one of lying to the media and the American people. Unfortunately, the way things are going, it seems like their lies could work.
You can listen to the audio of the McCain campaign conference call here. (Warning: 17.5 MB WAV file.)
Best. Campaign. Ever.
Sean Tevis is running for State Representative in Kansas. If you have $8.34 to spare, you should send it his way. Here’s why. We need more candidates like him.

Moar Mittens!!
Sorry for the lack of postage, but I’ve been busy in my real life. Hopefully, John McCain will pick Mitt Romney to be his veep, thus providing a nearly infinite supply of lulz until November. Then we’ll be back in business.

How the Media Pays the Rent
Is the media blowing the New Yorker Obama cartoon controversy being blown a little bit out of proportion? Well, the talking heads do have bills to pay.
MN-Sen: Ventura Is Out
Former Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura is not running for Senate. This is terrible news for Jon Stewart.
Drake to Hold Fundraiser with Karl Rove
Congresswoman Thelma Drake (R-VA) is holding a fundraiser that I doubt her fellow Republicans will be emulating:
Yes, she’s really trying to sell a photo with Karl Rove, who is apparently back in the US after fleeing the country to avoid a Congressional subpoena. This can only be good news for Glenn Nye.
Bush Official Caught Offering Access to Administration in Exchange for Donations to Bush Library
It’s business-as-usual for the Bush Administration:
The Sunday Times reports Stephen Payne, a Bush pioneer and a political appointee to the Homeland Security Advisory Council, was caught on tape offering access to key members of the Bush administration inner circle in exchange for “six-figure donations to the private library being set up to commemorate Bush’s presidency.”
In an undercover video, Payne is seen promising to arrange a meeting for an exiled leader of Krygystan with Dick Cheney or Condoleezza Rice. (Not President Bush because “he doesn’t meet with a lot of former Presidents these days,” Payne says. “I don’t think he meets with hardly anyone.”) All it will take for him to arrange this high-level meeting, says Payne, is “a couple hundred thousand dollars, or something like that.”
Watch the video here.
Of course, Payne will claim “executive privilege” so he’ll never have to testify about any of this under oath. Bribery is yet another law that doesn’t apply to the Bush Administration.
Anheuser-Busch Sold to InBev
Does anyone know how to say “Wassup” in Dutch?
Anheuser-Busch agreed on Sunday night to sell itself to the Belgian brewer InBev for about $52 billion, putting control of the nation’s largest beer maker and a fixture of American culture into a European rival’s hands.
…
The all-cash deal, for $70 a share, would create the world’s largest brewer, uniting the maker of Budweiser and Michelob with the producer of Stella Artois, Bass and Brahma. Together, the two companies would have sales of more than $36 billion a year, surpassing the current No. 1 brewer, SABMiller of London. The combined company is expected to be named Anheuser-Busch InBev, fulfilling a promise by the Belgian company to include the Anheuser name in the new brewer’s title, people briefed on the matter said. Anheuser will be given two seats on the board, including one for August A. Busch IV, the company’s chief executive and a scion of its controlling family.
