A crucial election news update:
Barack Obama told donors at a Monday night fundraiser just across the Potomac River from Washington that “the odds of us winning are very good.”…“What I knew and I think those who joined us early knew was that this was a moment for change, this was a moment for big ideas and really trying to push the envelope,” said Obama. “And people have responded all across the country. We are now in a position where the odds of us winning are very good. But it’s still going to be difficult.”
So, in other words… Barack Obama… in a room full of people he wants money from… says he thinks he will win the election. Stop the presses! It’s just shocking! No candidate before has been so bold! Assemble the talking heads!
Seriously. And these people are supposed to be “the best political team on television”? I mean, I know you have to fill 24 hours of news each day, but next time be more like the Washington Post and just reprint some old news from eight years ago.
Jeb Obama?
This caption from CNN just doesn’t make any sense:
If you can’t read the caption, it says: “Jeb Obama campaigned in Colorado Thursday.”
Jeb Obama? Seriously? What exactly do these people get paid for, anyway?
The Puerto Rico Effect
CNN called Puerto Rico for Clinton as soon as the polls closed (3:00pm Eastern) and is projecting a huge win. Will it matter, though? Doesn’t look like it:
Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton claimed a convincing win over Sen. Barack Obama in today’s Puerto Rico primary, a victory that may well be her last in her fading bid for the Democratic presidential nomination.
Also:
Election officials expect to see a low vote count — perhaps just 400,000 out of nearly 3 million registered voters — as the polls are about to close here. Such a number would be far lower than turnout usually is for local elections.
(On a separate note, I got to meet NBC’s Chuck Todd yesterday at the RBC meeting. Cool!)
Bush Still Most Unpopular President Ever
Following on the heels of last week’s Gallup poll, a new CNN poll confirms that George W. Bush is still the worst president in modern history.
A CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Thursday indicates that 71 percent of the American public disapprove of how Bush his handling his job as president.
“No president has ever had a higher disapproval rating in any CNN or Gallup poll; in fact, this is the first time that any president’s disapproval rating has cracked the 70 percent mark,” said CNN Polling Director Keating Holland.
“Bush’s approval rating, which stands at 28 percent in our new poll, remains better than the all-time lows set by Harry Truman and Richard Nixon (22 percent and 24 percent, respectively) but even those two presidents never got a disapproval rating in the 70s,” Holland added. “The previous all-time record in CNN or Gallup polling was set by Truman, 66 percent disapproval in January 1952.”
CNN Senior Political Analyst Bill Schneider adds, “He is more unpopular than Richard Nixon was just before he resigned from the presidency in August 1974.” President Nixon’s disapproval rating in August 1974 stood at 67 percent.
The poll also indicates that support for the war in Iraq has never been lower. Thirty percent of those questioned favored the war while 68 percent opposed the conflict.
“Americans are growing more pessimistic about the war,” Holland said. “In January, nearly half believed that things were going well for the U.S. in Iraq; now that figure has dropped to 39 percent.”
Mission accomplished: George Bush and his war are both failures.
Media Idiocy
John Cole on the group of hacks and morons otherwise known as the American media establishment:
I guess Reverend Wright hasn’t said something stupid today. Seriously, I’ve seen a lot of stupid shit in CNN’s “Breaking News” header, but this really did it for me.
People are dying in Iraq. You need a credit check to buy gas. Your home belongs to the bank now. But stop the fucking presses, ‘cause there’s a pelican in a freakin’ tree!
I guess they need something to keep themselves busy when they aren’t penning alliterative headlines about lesbians.
The Issues That Matter
Sometimes, the traditional media really misses the issues that matter.
Right now, President Bush is in Africa on a “goodwill” (he still has some in Africa) tour of the continent. Today, he’s in Tanzania, where the big news should have been an almost $700 million grant to help the Tanzanian government stop the spread of malaria, a serious health problem in that country. CNN includes the details of the aid package in an article on the visit, but the headline and lede completely miss the point.
No, despite what you might be thinking, this clip isn’t from The Onion:
Don’t make the mistake of just reading the headlines on CNN, or you might get the impression that Bush’s big gift to Tanzania is Shaquille O’Neal’s shoes, not the millions of dollars being spent to help combat Tanzania’s disease-ridden populace.
Glenn Beck Wants Californians to Burn
Over a quarter of a million people have been forced from their homes as over a dozen fires burn across Southern California. Governor Schwarzenegger called it “a tragic time for California” as he declared a state of emergency and requested assistance from the Departments of Agriculture and Defense to help California firefighters.
All the major media outlets have been covering the wildfires all day, including on CNN’s Headline News. The fires were even briefly mentioned on Glenn Beck’s nationally syndicated radio program. How did the wildfires come up? In a rant about people who hate America (emphasis mine):
Let’s talk about health care and education? That’s not the way to win. That’s not the way to win on any front. I’m not even talking about — the least I care about is winning the election. How about winning the war? How about saving our country?
…
[W]e’re all one America, that just because I disagree with you doesn’t mean you hate America, and I love America. We all love America. We just disagree on how we should function, what we should do, big government, small government. It doesn’t mean you hate America. I think there is a handful of people who hate America. Unfortunately for them, a lot of them are losing their homes in a forest fire today.
Wait, what? How dare you, Glenn Beck! People are losing their homes and their lives and all you can think of is their political views? I can’t even comprehend how one person can show so little compassion for their fellow man. Where is your compassion? Where is your sense of decency? I can barely find the words to express how outraged I am at the base insensitivity of your comments.
Are you offended too? Let Glenn Beck know.
