“We Now Know Who the Democratic Nominee Is Going to Be”

By Eric on May 6, 2008

Barack Obama won a decisive victory in North Carolina, while Hillary Clinton barely eked out a win in Indiana. Obama also did better among women than he had in Ohio and Pennsylvania. If Russert’s claim that Clinton had canceled all of her media appearances tomorrow is true, we could be seeing the end of this thing soon.

Update: Ah, crap. Maybe not:

This is what Harold Ickes, a longtime advisory to both Bill and Hillary Clinton, told Mark Halperin of Time’s The Page tonight:

“We don’t know enough about Senator Obama yet. We don’t need an October Surprise. And (the chance of) an October Surprise with Hillary is remote.”

This remark is dismaying on several levels, partly because Ickes is virtually channeling Karl Rove, who implied something similar in a recent interview with GQ — not backed up by any information of course. Just planting this vague idea in Joe Average Voter’s head that there’s something about Barry — pick your vice, political or personal — that all the kool kidz inside the Beltway know about, and it’s going to pop one week before the election, is the only strategy here.

GOP Staffer Punches Reporter, Democratic Candidate

By Eric on April 9, 2008

Despite record increases in voter registration nationwide, the Delaware County (IN) Voter Registration Office doesn’t have the staff to process voter registrations in time for the primary. Indiana voter registration is apparently a highly partisan affair, so there were a good number of people, including many Barack Obama supporters, awaiting the decision of an emergency meeting of the County Election Board.

After the meeting ended, things got really ugly really fast:

The meeting had just ended when Will Statom, GOP registration deputy and secretary of the local Republican Party, attacked Star Press reporter Nick Werner while Werner was interviewing Ball State University student Johanna Perez about hundreds of last-minute voter registrations for Democrat Barack Obama’s campaign.

“He did not seem very happy that we were stating our opinions,” Perez said afterwards about Statom.

Werner said Statom seemed critical of his reporting, sarcastically saying to make sure he screwed up the story again.

Statom had just walked past Werner when Statom turned around and pushed Werner against the wall, grabbed him and they fell to the ground, according to witnesses.

Barry A. Welsh, Democratic 6th district congressional candidate, who attended the meeting, stepped in, and Statom turned around and hit Welsh in the eye.
…
Sheriff’s investigator Todd Daily said Statom was interviewed, and would be booked on battery charges, based on a battery affidavit signed by Werner.

If Delaware County voters, regardless of who they plan on voting for, don’t already have a good reason to vote, then here’s a reason to turn out in huge numbers on election day. This kind of conduct by election officials is inexcusable.

Update: Barry Welsh responds on DailyKos, “Yes, I got hit in the eye, but the real fight is for Democracy.”
