Scarborough Says F-Word on Live Television

By Eric on November 10, 2008

And apparently doesn’t notice that he said it and just keeps on talking while everybody else laughs at him.

This is the greatest video in the history of all time.

GOP Pundits Trash Palin, But the Mic’s Still On!

By Eric on September 3, 2008

Peggy Noonan may write that Sarah Palin is the greatest thing since sliced bread, but let’s hear how she feels when she forgets that her mic is still on:

Rough transcript from Pandagon:

Murphy: You know, because I come out of the blue swing state government work. Engler, Whitman, Thompson, Mitt Romney, Jeb Bush. And these guys, this is all how you want to (inaudible) this race. You know, just run it up. And it’s not gonna work.
Noonan: It’s over.
Murphy: Still, McCain can give a version of the Lieberman speech to do himself some good.
Noonan: I saw Kay this morning
Todd: They’re all bummed out. I mean, is she really the most qualified woman they could have turned to?
Murphy: She’s never been comfortable.
Noonan: The most qualified? No. I think they went for this, excuse me, political bullshit about narratives and (inaudible) the picture.
Murphy: Yeah, but what’s the narrative?
Noonan: Every time the Republicans do that because that’s not where they live and it’s not what they’re good at and they blow it.
Murphy: You know what’s really the worst thing about it? The greatness of McCain is no cynicism
Todd: And as you called it gimmicky.
Murphy: … and this is cynicism.

But please, Peggy, tell us how you really feel?

Update: Shorter Peggy Noonan: Oh shit!

NBC’s Russert Dies of Heart Attack at 58

By Eric on June 13, 2008

Very sad news today from NBC.

Tim Russert, NBC News’ Washington bureau chief and the moderator of “Meet the Press,” died Friday after a sudden heart attack at the bureau, NBC News said Friday. He was 58.

Russert was recording voiceovers for Sunday’s “Meet the Press” program when he collapsed, the network said. He and his family had recently returned from Italy, where they celebrated the graduation of Russert’s son, Luke, from Boston College.

No further details were immediately available.

Update: Emotional reflections from NBC Political Director Chuck Todd:

Racism

By Eric on June 6, 2008

Via Atrios, MSNBC “reporter” Courtney Hazlett called Spike Lee “uppity” while discussing the feud between Lee and Clint Eastwood regarding the lack of African Americans in Eastwood’s World War II movies. HuffPo’s Danny Shea reminds us:

While the literal definition of “uppity” is “taking liberties or assuming airs beyond one’s station,” it is largely seen to have a racist connotation when applied to African Americans (witness the 2007 outcry after Salon labeled Obama “uppity” and then quickly swapped the word out for “smug”).

Video below, and may I add how totally awesome it is that racism is not “a big deal” in America anymore.

Update: Barack Obama can and will break all kinds of barriers, but there will always be racist assholes. Oh, and if the video embed doesn’t work, you can see it at Gawker.

The Puerto Rico Effect

By Eric on June 1, 2008

CNN called Puerto Rico for Clinton as soon as the polls closed (3:00pm Eastern) and is projecting a huge win. Will it matter, though? Doesn’t look like it:

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton claimed a convincing win over Sen. Barack Obama in today’s Puerto Rico primary, a victory that may well be her last in her fading bid for the Democratic presidential nomination.

Also:

Election officials expect to see a low vote count — perhaps just 400,000 out of nearly 3 million registered voters — as the polls are about to close here. Such a number would be far lower than turnout usually is for local elections.

(On a separate note, I got to meet NBC’s Chuck Todd yesterday at the RBC meeting. Cool!)

“We Now Know Who the Democratic Nominee Is Going to Be”

By Eric on May 6, 2008

Barack Obama won a decisive victory in North Carolina, while Hillary Clinton barely eked out a win in Indiana. Obama also did better among women than he had in Ohio and Pennsylvania. If Russert’s claim that Clinton had canceled all of her media appearances tomorrow is true, we could be seeing the end of this thing soon.

Update: Ah, crap. Maybe not:

This is what Harold Ickes, a longtime advisory to both Bill and Hillary Clinton, told Mark Halperin of Time’s The Page tonight:

“We don’t know enough about Senator Obama yet. We don’t need an October Surprise. And (the chance of) an October Surprise with Hillary is remote.”

This remark is dismaying on several levels, partly because Ickes is virtually channeling Karl Rove, who implied something similar in a recent interview with GQ — not backed up by any information of course. Just planting this vague idea in Joe Average Voter’s head that there’s something about Barry — pick your vice, political or personal — that all the kool kidz inside the Beltway know about, and it’s going to pop one week before the election, is the only strategy here.
