Obama Wins North Carolina
The News & Observer has just called the race and declared Obama the apparent winner in North Carolina. That makes the final electoral count Obama 364, McCain 174.
Real Americans Voted for Obama
And they rejected Sarah Palin:
Results for Guilford County, where Sarah Palin made her remarks about real Americans in pro-America parts of the country:
- Obama/Biden 58.75%
- McCain/Palin 40.44%
Obama Supporters’ Tires Slashed During Rally
More respectable campaigning:
Someone slashed the tires of at least 30 vehicles parked outside the Crown Coliseum on Sunday during a rally for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, authorities said.
Sheriff’s deputies are investigating. The tires were cut while people were inside the Crown Coliseum listening to speeches, said Maj. E. Wright of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.
Many of the damaged vehicles were parked on Wilkes Road. Representatives from Obama and Sen. John McCain’s campaigns said they were unaware of the acts.
…
Sarah Revis, who lives on Wilkes Road, said the slashed tires left several women, including a single mother and a toddler, stranded and upset. At least four tow trucks were sent to move the vehicles from the Crown, Revis said.“This is an embarrassment to this city and to me as a citizen,” Revis said. “I’ve seen women out here crying and men cussing. This is a crying shame.”
Did John McCain and Sarah Palin go out and tell their supporters to slash people’s tires? Of course not. But have they whipped their supporters into a hateful anti-Obama frenzy? You betcha.
Changing the Map
Today’s polls show a lot of good news for Obama, but of particular importance is that Virginia might be just a stepping stone to a really big prize:
Barack Obama 47
John McCain 45
Bob Barr 3With concern about the economy continuing to mount, Barack Obama has taken the lead for the first time in a PPP poll of North Carolina.
Over the last year there’s been a strong relationship between the number of North Carolinians listing the economy as their biggest concern, and Obama’s standing in the polls. In January when just 39% of voters said it was their biggest issue John McCain led by 14 points. In August with it up to 48% Obama trailed by just three. Last week with 58% listing it number one the race was tied, and now with the number up to a record 64% Obama has taken a small lead. He is up 55-38 among respondents citing the economy as their main concern.
…
Independents are moving toward Obama in droves. Where last week he had a 42-39 advantage with them, now he is up 48-37. He also now receives 36% of the white vote, up from 33%. He will likely need 35-38% in that demographic to win the state, depending on how high turnout from black voters is.Full results here. (PDF)
Thanks to Barack’s strong stance on the economy and a really energizing Senate race, we could be looking at a really different electoral college map on November 4th.
“We Now Know Who the Democratic Nominee Is Going to Be”
Barack Obama won a decisive victory in North Carolina, while Hillary Clinton barely eked out a win in Indiana. Obama also did better among women than he had in Ohio and Pennsylvania. If Russert’s claim that Clinton had canceled all of her media appearances tomorrow is true, we could be seeing the end of this thing soon.
Update: Ah, crap. Maybe not:
This is what Harold Ickes, a longtime advisory to both Bill and Hillary Clinton, told Mark Halperin of Time’s The Page tonight:
“We don’t know enough about Senator Obama yet. We don’t need an October Surprise. And (the chance of) an October Surprise with Hillary is remote.”
This remark is dismaying on several levels, partly because Ickes is virtually channeling Karl Rove, who implied something similar in a recent interview with GQ — not backed up by any information of course. Just planting this vague idea in Joe Average Voter’s head that there’s something about Barry — pick your vice, political or personal — that all the kool kidz inside the Beltway know about, and it’s going to pop one week before the election, is the only strategy here.
