The final class project was a challenging one. We were randomly paired up and given 48 hours to produce four portraits of our partner and four self-portraits. My partner and I immediately rushed to the lighting studio. For my portraits of her, I wanted to show her doing ordinary, natural things–walking down the street, reading, and the like–in the very unnatural, forced setting of the lighting studio. I did my self-portraits later that night, and modified my original idea to have my self doing mundane things in the wrong places. You’ll see what I mean when you look at the photos. The assignment for this project was to emulate another photographer’s work. I chose Henry Wessel and emulated his “Real Estate Photos” series (you can see some of his work here). None of these houses are particularly interesting in and of themselves, but Wessel manages to evoke a mysterious quality from each one. Each of his houses has the same manufactured appearance, but he captures them in a way that gives each one a unique identity.

I tried to bring out these same qualities in my photos. Unlike the California neighborhoods where Wessel worked, the many neighborhoods of St. Louis have varied and diverse architecture, so my photos don’t have that same “cookie-cutter” feel as his. Instead, all of the houses in my series have a similar red brick exterior that unifies them. Click on any photo to enlarge the gallery.

This is the first conceptual project that we had. Our assignment was to present a series of images that reflected our idea of “personal space.” I chose to shoot empty chairs in order to show the spaces that people leave behind. Click on any photo to enlarge the gallery.

A large part of the reason that I decided to make an online photo gallery is that I’m taking a Digital Photography class at school. This first gallery contains the images that I turned in for my first project in that class.

This first project was a very technical getting-to-know-your-camera* project. We had to turn in thirteen images, each of which demonstrated one of the following techniques:

Shallow depth-of-field
Medium depth-of-field
Great depth-of-field
Showing motion
Showing stop-motion
Panning
Indoor lighting
Outdoor lighting
Low lighting
Mixed lighting
Bird’s eye view
Ant’s eye view
Abstract an everyday object.

Without further ado, here are the images I selected for that project. *For those who are curious, “my” camera is a borrowed Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT. As you can probably tell from the picture and description, I have nice friends.
