The assignment for this project was to emulate another photographer’s work. I chose Henry Wessel and emulated his “Real Estate Photos” series (you can see some of his work here). None of these houses are particularly interesting in and of themselves, but Wessel manages to evoke a mysterious quality from each one. Each of his houses has the same manufactured appearance, but he captures them in a way that gives each one a unique identity.
I tried to bring out these same qualities in my photos. Unlike the California neighborhoods where Wessel worked, the many neighborhoods of St. Louis have varied and diverse architecture, so my photos don’t have that same “cookie-cutter” feel as his. Instead, all of the houses in my series have a similar red brick exterior that unifies them. Click on any photo to enlarge the gallery.
