  • FOX News is sad that Barack Obama is so mean to the Senate Republicans, who are just interested in good-faith negotiation! (FOX News)
  • Is Texas Gov. Rick Perry totally gay for earmarks? Yes, according to fellow Republican and opponent Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison! (CNN)
  • New York Gov. David Paterson will not run for reelection because governing is just so hard! And definitely not because of any domestic violence scandal or abuse of power, or anything. (NYT)
  • Black people were much better off as slaves than they are now because they are all abort-o-holics, according to Rep. Trent Franks (R-AZ). I for one am looking forward to when Michael Steele has to go on TV to defend this statement. (TPM)
  • Florida Senate candidate Marco Rubio is all about fiscal responsibility, which is why he will pay back the Florida GOP for the flights he accidentally charged to the state party’s credit card. (Miami Herald)
  • Thailand’s highest court fined former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra almost $1.5 billion after finding him guilty of corruption. This practice, known as “accountability,” could never happen in this country! (Guardian)

Democracy, Inaction

Sen. Gillibrand (D-NY)?

Is this the real deal?

PIX NEWS is being told that Congresswoman Kirsten Gillibrand is the reported choice of Governor David Paterson to fill the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Hillary Clinton. Two Congressional sources say members of the New York delegation have been invited to join Governor Paterson for the announcement in Albany at noon tomorrow.

This is the only media outlet reporting it so far. We’ll see what happens tomorrow.

Update: Reuters says Paterson will announce his pick tomorrow, but no word on who it is.

Update 2: New York Dems already talking about primary challenges to Gillibrand in 2010, lending some credibility to the rumors.

Update 3: Yep, it’s Gillibrand. Paterson’s presser at noon will make it official.

Monday Morning Update

  • Here’s one for the annals of douchebaggery. A Blago spokesman denies rumors that the Governor will resign today or tomorrow. On the contrary, he’s going to go into his office and prepare to sign or veto bills, including one which would take away his authority to appoint someone to the Senate. Wonder how that one will go. (New York Times)
  • Well, it was only a matter of time. Play the official George W. Bush Shoe Throw game. How many times can you hit the Still-President with a shoe? (blogslut via Wonkette)
  • Remember George “Macaca” Allen, the guy who was almost a sure bet for the Republican nomination for president until he revealed his inner racism? Well, he’s still making the right-wing talk circuit, but now he’s switched to sports metaphors instead of insulting the brown people. Good call. (DC Examiner)
  • It looks like Saturday Night Live crossed a line this time. In a Weekend Update segment “with” New York Gov. David Paterson, the SNL writers decided to make fun of both the strange circumstances of how he came to be governor (fair game) and his blindness (not fair game). The actor playing Paterson portrayed him as “confused and disoriented — often looking in the wrong direction and mistakenly walking in front of the camera when it was not his turn to speak.” Not very classy at all. (CNN)

Friday Morning Update

  • Well, the Big 3 bailout failed in the Senate last night because Senate Republicans didn’t want to pay auto workers a fair wage, to which the auto workers shockingly objected. Anyway, it now falls to the White House to take some of the money previously allocated to bailing out millionaire bankers and use it to bail out some $50k-per-year blue collar workers. Good luck selling that one to the millionaires. (Washington Post/Politico)
  • Convicted felon Sen. Ted Stevens is a sore loser. He refuses to meet with Mark Begich, the man who will replace him in the United States Senate in January. Maybe Stevens tried to send him an email, but it got tangled up with all these things going on the Internet commercially. (Anchorage Daily News/Wikipedia)
  • Clinton supporters are putting pressure on NY Gov. David Paterson not to appoint Caroline Kennedy to fill Hillary Clinton’s Senate seat, noting that Kennedy has never been elected to any office. I thought dashing good looks and poltical experience were hereditary in the Kennedy family? (NY Daily News)
  • Illinois House Democrats and Republicans are meeting to discuss the logistics of impeaching Gov. Rod Blagojevich. Huzzah for bipartisanship! Also, Illinois newspaper editorial boards are humorously conflicted over whether Blaggy should resign or be impeached. Hmmmm…. (AP/FOX News)

Saturday Morning Blogging

  • OJ Simpson is headed to the juicer. He was sentenced to 33 years in prison for his role in an armed robbery at a Las Vegas casino last year. He’ll be eligible for parole in 9 years at which point he can go back to his normal life of leading police on car chases and pretending he’s not a murderer. (CNN)
  • Bill Ayers, America’s favorite unrepentant domestic terrorist and alleged BFF of President-Elect Barack Obama, defends himself and explains who he was really palling around with in the sixties and seventies. (New York Times)
  • To celebrate the fact that they still have jobs, your U.S. Congress will go back to working five-day weeks again starting in January. How generous! (The Hill)
  • Caroline Kennedy reportedly has been in discussions with NY Gov. David Paterson on taking over Hillary Clinton’s Senate seat when Clinton resigns to become Secretary of State. Woohoo! More Senator Kennedys!

Disgrace with Dignity

Shortly after being sworn in as Governor of New York, David Paterson, with his wife at his side, admitted that he had had multiple affairs. Yeah, that’s the new New York Governor who slept around on his wife.

In today’s NYT, Gail Collins offered three rules for future disgraced politicians:

1) No wife at the humiliating press conference.

2) No blaming the affairs on wife, especially if she’s standing beside you in total contradiction of Rule No. 1.

3) All former mistresses deserve advance notice, especially if they are soon going to be asked to explain their qualifications for the $150,000 job.

Regarding rule 3, that mistress is apparently doing a great job. Still, probably better to be safe than sorry.

Update: But wait, there’s more. Via C&L:
