Boehner to Caucus: “Behave like grown-ups”

Trying to stay class after HCR passes:

House Minority Leader John Boehner told his conference to “behave like grown-ups” if the healthcare bill is passed by the House on Sunday.

The Ohio Republican made the warning at a quick closed-door meeting with fellow House GOP lawmakers at noon in the Capitol.

According to several lawmakers who attended the 15 minute meeting, Boehner said “we will behave like grown-ups,” and not engage in taunting the vulnerable Democrats who support the controversial measure.

Leaders anticipated that the Democrats will erupt in applause if the bill passes and they don’t want Republicans to react with a chorus of “Nah-nah-nah-nah hey, hey, hey good-bye,” as happened in November when the House healthcare bill was approved.

In response: hahaha, Boehner.

Being Gay is Your Choice, Religion is in Your DNA

John BoehnerSo says the office of House Minority Leader John Boehner:

Questioned about why the House’s top Republican opposes a hate crimes bill penalizing violence against gays, his spokesman said he “supports existing federal protections (based on race, religion, gender, etc) based on immutable characteristics,” just not protections for things like being gay — which conservatives occasionally claim is a choice.

“He does not support adding sexual orientation to the list of protected classes,” Boehner spokesman Kevin Smith added. The statement was made in an email to CBS News.

In other words, religion is a trait you’re born with.

Putting aside the sheer idiocy of Smith’s “you’re born Christian but choose to be gay” argument, the “immutable characteristic” of gender is not actually protected under existing federal law.

The stupid, it burns.

Okay, So There Is No Federal Investigation of Sarah Palin

palin-i-quit

  • The FBI says that Sarah Palin is not under investigation and anyone who says otherwise will be shot with a moose gun, legal style. She is, however, the subject of many costly state ethics investigations–because not being under investigation is “politics as usual” and she is a maverick–so there’s one reason why she may be resigning. (CNN/New York Times)
  • Sen. Chris Dodd and the Democratic leadership want to know just who this Barack Obama character thinks he is, wanting his health care bill by October 15. That is obviously not going to happen because of, um, Sonia Sotomayor, somehow. (Roll Call)
  • I hope Republicans appreciate that they have an entire television channel, FOX News, which lets them go on America’s teevees and just make shit up–like, for example, allowing John Boehner to say that there have been no stimulus-funded proejcts in Ohio when there have actually been $83 million worth of stimulus projects in Ohio. (Media Matters)
  • Your President Obama is headed to Russia today to talk about the good old days (Socialism) and maybe eliminate some nuclear weapons while he’s there. But then what will we nuke Iran with? (Washington Post)
  • Michael Jackson fans, here is a convenient list of people you can beat up and steal Michael Jackson funeral tickets from. (Los Angeles Times)
  • According to Science, your coffee can prevent Alzheimer’s. When they figure out how to dispense it intraveneously, sign me up. (CBS News)

All of Your Washingon Area Newspapers are Frauds

  • The Washington Times. Most Washingtonians know that it is “fair and balanced” in the FOX News sense, meaning that it is run by batshit crazy right-wingers. But it is one thing to reprint Republican propaganda and another thing to email it out directly, which is what your Washington Times did when they sent a fundraising letter for John Boehner to all of their email subscribers. Hey, at least the Post pretends that their newsroom isn’t for sale. (Media Matters)
  • Roger Federer defeated Andy Roddick to win his 15th Grand Slam, making him basically the greatest tennis player ever. And as a prize, Federer gets to do bong hits with Michael Phelps. (BBC Sport)
  • So Iran, there is still a disputed election going on, not that America cares anymore because Michael Jackson is dead. However, a group of clerics in Qum have denounced the new government as illegitimate in defiance of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei. This could get interesting. (New York Times)
  • If Sarah Palin resigned to spend more time with her family, why did her father-in-law hear about her resignation by email? Joe Palin says he was fishing when suddenly he saw on his phone that his daughter-in-law was not going to be Governor anymore. When will Sarah Palin sue Joe Palin, for saying things about her on the internet? (People)

After Rewriting Stimulus Bill, GOP Still Won’t Support It

This should come as a surprise to absolutely nobody, since this is how Republicans define bipartisanship:

While GOP lawmakers said they appreciated Obama’s visit, their leaders urged a “no” vote because of the bill’s price tag. “All it does is burden our kids and their kids with more debt,” said House Republican leader John Boehner of Ohio, citing a non-partisan Congressional Budget Office estimate that the plan would add $347 billion in interest on the national debt over 10 years.

Rep. Mike Castle, R-Del., said there could be as many as 10 to 15 Republicans supporting the package, but added, “If I had to bet, I would bet zero.”

So after President Obama personally comes to the Hill and makes the compromises that House Republicans demanded, they won’t guarantee a single vote? I say fuck ‘em. Put the money for family planning back in and take out the GOP tax cuts (which now make up 33% of the bill). Boehner and company don’t care if the country spirals into a depression as long as they can score their cheap political points. If Republicans won’t support a watered-down stimulus bill that they helped create, let the Democratic majority pass a better bill without them.

GOP Simultaneously Supports, Opposes Stimulus

It’s a truly remarkable day for American journalism when Republicans can say two contradictory things at the same time and the media accepts both at face value. Observe.

Where’s that pesky “liberal media” when you need it?
