Thank Goodness for the Sanctity of Marriage

  • San Diego developer Doug Manchester is getting divorced after spending $125,000 of his own money to “protect” marriage from The Gays. Nice priorities there, Doug! (San Diego City Beat)
  • And speaking of successful marriages, life is so tough for Mark Sanford now that he has to live alone without the woman he loves. And without his wife Jenny. (CNN Political Ticker)
  • George W. Bush was such a jerk to Dick Cheney, according to Cheney’s forthcoming tell-all book. Forgive me if I don’t shed a tear. (WaPo)
  • Anna Falling, Republican candidate for mayor of Tulsa, has just one campaign promise: to install a Christian creationist exhibit in the Tulsa Zoo. Then, maybe God will come down to fight crime, balance the budget, and fix potholes. (Tulsa World)
  • Protesting the USPS’ decision to close your local post office by sending an email really just proves the Postal Service’s point, dontcha think? (Citydesk)

Dear Prop 8 Supporters: Don’t Divorce These People

The “family values” and “sanctity of marriage” folks have a new game. Fresh off of the passage of California’s Proposition 8, the “Prop 8 Legal Defense Fund” led by Ken Starr–yes, that Ken Starr–has filed a lawsuit seeking to invalidate 18,000 legal marriages between gay couples before Prop 8 was passed.

The Courage Campaign collected photos from gay couples whose marriages were recognized under California law until November. These are the people who Ken Starr and the “sanctity of marriage” people want to divorce. These are the families that they want to destroy.

“Fidelity”: Don’t Divorce… from Courage Campaign on Vimeo.

Sign the petition asking the California Supreme Court not to forcibly divorce 18,000 couples.

Congressional Black Caucus Members Speak Out Against Prop 8

California Rep. Watson equivocates, but listen to Congressmen Johnson and Lewis. They hit the nail on the head that the gay rights struggle is a civil rights struggle.

Sunday Night Blog Wrapup

Well, technically Sunday afternoon, but it’s dark outside so that may as well be night.

  • Check out the midnight regulations the Bush administration is trying to push through before January 20. Uranium mining near the Grand Canyon, even more surveillance, loaded guns in national parks, and less aid for sex trafficking victims are at the top of my list of things that set off alarm bells. But hey, if anyone can destroy this country in two months, it’s George W. Bush. (ProPublica)
  • And speaking of destroying the country, rich guy Steve Forbes says Hank Paulson is the worst Treasury Secretary ever. Unfortunately, he still gets to run economic policy for the next couple months. Bummer. Maybe Steve Forbes could help by putting in some of his millions. (CNN)
  • The AP has compiled a list of everyone that Barack Obama is still considering for cabinet posts. So far it’s Timothy Geithner at Treasury, Hillary Clinton at State, Eric Holder as Attorney General, Tom Daschle at HHS, Janet Napolitano at DHS, John Brennan as CIA Director, Bill Richardson at Commerce, Lawrence Summers as Director of the National Economic Council, and Peter Orszag at OMB. Every other position is still up for grabs. (Associated Press)
  • Andrew Sullvian makes a good catch on the LGBT rights front. While gays around the country protest the passage of Prop 8, the Human Rights Campaign is holding a fundraiser at Bloomingdale’s to raise money for themselves. Only in America could the response to a major crisis be, “Go shopping.” (Andrew Sullivan)

  • Since he’s decided to be a Democrat again, Joe Lieberman tried to scratch the McCain ’08 bumper sticker off of his car. He only got half of it off, but that will probably be enough for him to keep his chairmanship of the Homeland Security committee. The decision from Senate Democrats will be handed down today. (Washington Post)
  • On the other side of the aisle, convicted felon Sen. Ted Stevens gets a lucky break, sort of. In honor of his 85th birthday today, Senate Republicans were planning on voting to expel him from the GOP caucus. They’ve put their plan on hold since it looks like Stevens might actually lose his election and the whole thing would just be moot. Happy birthday, dear Tubes! (CNN)
  • Must… control… schadenfreude… Focus on the Family, American’s very own Colorado-based Taliban, has had to lay off 20 percent of its staff after pumping half a million dollars into California’s Prop 8 and then suddenly realizing that they were out of money to pay people. Beating up on the gays is a higher priority for these “Christians” than the livelihood of the people who work for them. Nice one, Dobson. (Colorado Independent)
  • Some random Dartmouth professor, who is in no way involved in the actual counting of votes in Minnesota, says that Al Franken will beat Norm Coleman. This would certainly be nice. The only thing is that he’s basing his prediction on statstical models and voting patterns but not, you know, how many ballots were cast. (Huffington Post)

This is what your religion tells you to do? This is what your heart tells you to do?

I’ve had mixed feelings about Keith Olbermann’s Special Comments, but this one should be universally watched.

Late Night Around the Blogosphere

It’s Sunday night or Monday morning, depending on what time zone you’re in. What did you miss while you were sleeping?

  • Remember that time when everyone said nominating a black guy was a mistake because Hispanics would never vote for him? Or when people said putting money into Republican strongholds like Virginia and North Carolina was a waste of resources? jdawg1077 takes us back to all the things the pundits got wrong about the 2008 elections. (DailyKos)
  • And while I’m over at DKos, JeffLieber posts his conversation with his six year-old daughter about California’s Prop 8. Turns out gay marriage really is hard to explain to a child, when it’s banned. (DailyKos)
  • Meanwhile, for those who are still dealing with how Prop 8 affects them, Melissa Etheridge has a suggestion: if the state of California isn’t going to treat her like a first-class citizen, she’s not paying her first-class taxes. Doesn’t sounds like a bad idea to me. (The Daily Beast)
  • So remember all that “change” stuff that Barack Obama’s been talking about for the past couple years? Well, it’s finally coming and… let’s just say you might want to keep track of your guns, flags, and daughters. (23/6)
  • The RNC and McCain campaign contacted 30 million voters directly (including with robocalls) before the election. Team Obama contacted 68 million. I guess that kinda explains why this whole election thing turned out the way it did. (Marc Ambinder)

No on 8

I’m sure this goes without saying for almost anyone reading this blog, but if you live in California, vote No on Prop 8 on Tuesday. In case you really need a reason…
