Madam Justice Sotomayor

By a vote of 68-31, Sonia Sotomayor has been confirmed as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, the third female and the first Hispanic justice.

That’s 59 Democrats (all but the absent Ted Kennedy) and 9 Republicans in favor, and the remaining 31 Republicans against. Or, if you’re keeping score comparatively, more votes in favor than Alito but fewer than Roberts.

Update: Via Sadly, No!, good thing Sotomayor was confirmed before Orly Taitz and company got their hands on this.

Teabaggers Have No Tolerance for Politicans Helping Their Constituents

Teabaggers: the epitome of rational, reasonable debate.

  • Hiding cash in the freezer did not go well for former Rep. William Jefferson (D-LA). (New Orleans Times-Picayune)
  • A new poll shows that old people on Medicare don’t think anyone else should have publicly-funded health insurance. (CNN)
  • Rep. Brad Ellsworth (D-IN) usually spends his recesses hanging out at grocery stores to help seniors and veterans navigate the federal bureaucracy, but not this summer because he doesn’t want to get beat up by teabaggers. (The Plum Line)
  • Nobody could have predicted that a sign saying “The President is a nagger” could be changed to say something less appropriate. (WLWT)
  • In a few hours, Sonia Sotomayor will be a Supreme Court justice. (Voice of America)

Where is Obama the Rhino’s Ugandan Birth Cerficate?

Quote of the Day

I am of the belief that unless we reverse the trend of Hispanic voter registration, we [the GOP] have a very, very deep hole that we’ve got to come out of.

–Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), who announced today that he will vote against Sonia Sotomayor, on how the GOP should do more to court Hispanic voters.

GOP’s 1-for-2 on Facts about Barack Obama

Showing Up to Events is “Politics as Usual”

Quitting: It's not just for jobs anymore.

  • Your U.S. government finally came up with a program that everybody likes, the cash-for-clunkers program, so they are ending it for lack of funding. (WaPo)
  • In addition to kinda being a wanker on healthcare reform, Sen. Max Baucus (D-MT) is also not sure if he’ll vote for Sonia Sotomayor. (The Hill)

Just a friendly suggestion.

  • According to Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), it is racist for Democrats to nominate a minority to the Supreme Court and then point out that most Republicans voted against her. (TPMDC)

Judiciary Committee Approves Sotomayor

Latina, Asian, what's the difference?
The Senate Judiciary Committee has approved Sonia Sotomayor, pictured above in her role as Mexico’s Buddha. Next stop is the full Senate, where she will be confirmed immediately unless some Democrats oppose her and/or Harry Reid has no spine. So basically she will never really be confirmed.

When Swine Flu Reared Its Head, Sarah Palin Was There

  • Everyone was so mean to Sarah Palin until she left, and now Alaska has the swine flu. Way to go, jerks! (KTUU)

Hooray for bipartisanship! (USA Today)
