Shorter Michael Schwartz

Quote of the Evening

We got too many Jim DeMints (R-S.C.) and Tom Coburns (R-Ok.). It’s the southerners. They get on TV and go ‘errrr, errrrr.’ People hear them and say, ‘These people, they’re southerners. The party’s being taken over by southerners. What they hell they got to do with Ohio?’

– Retiring Sen. George Voinovich (R-OH)

Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Brotherhood

You guys are my best friends, through thick and thin, We've always been together!

  • Sen. Tom Coburn will never tell us what he said to John Ensign about Ensign’s affair, except he already has. (Roll Call/Politico, via DKos)
  • Visitors to DC, it is totally reasonable to confuse the Capitol with the White House, what with both of them having giant frickin’ domes on top of them. (Spotted: DC Summer Interns)
  • Poor Michael Jackson! Your House of Representatives will not vote on a resolution honoring him because there are too may “contrary views.” Too bad, because it’s not like they have anything important to do, right? (CNN)
  • Sen. Al Franken is meeting with Sonia Sotomayor to exchange humorous race-jokes about white people. (Minnesota Public Radio)

Quote of the Day

I was counseling [Sen. Ensign] as a physician and as an ordained deacon. … That is privileged communication that I will never reveal to anybody.

Sen. Tom Coburn, invoking doctor-patient confidentiality to avoid answering questions about John Ensign’s affair. Coburn is an OB/Gyn.

Rod Blagojevich Is Probably Going to Federal Prison

Rod Blagojevich will go to "federal pound-me-in-the-ass prison."

  • Not a good day for ex-Gov. Rod Blagojevich. John Harris, his former chief of staff, struck a plea bargain in which he will plead guilty to wire fraud and implicate Blagojevich. Will this be the Illinois version of “the bitch set me up?” (CNN)
  • Your Minnesota GOP cut Al Franken a check for $95,000 to help cover the cost of Norm Coleman’s numerous legal challenges. Who are the humorous comedians now, MN GOP? (Minneapolis Star-Tribune)
  • Someone named Bush says President Obama is decieving the American public. Okay, it’s Jeb, but seriously, Bush family, you don’t really have any credibility there. (Esquire)
  • John Ensign, remember him? The guy who had an affair like three days before Mark Sanford? Well, Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) knew about Ensign’s affair a year ago and told Ensign to end it because of family values. Coburn also told Ensign to pay the husband of the woman he was having an affair with “millions of dollars” to get him off his case because of, um, “family values?” (Politico)
  • Your New York Times published a series of photos on real estate projects that have been abandoned because of the recession. There’s one problem though, which is that all of the pictures are fake. Why does your professional news media fail so much? (Editor & Publisher)
