Nats Sweep Yankees!

Adam Dunn follows through on an RBI double in the first inning. (Frank Franklin II/AP)And a shut-out, no less, from The Worst Team in Baseball™, your Washington Nationals:

Craig Stammen got his first big league win Thursday and the Washington Nationals got a near-perfect effort from its bullpen to blank the New York Yankees 3-0.

After a rain delay of almost five hours, the Nationals managed to put together their first two-game winning streak since early May. It was the first shutout recorded by Washington this season.

Does this mean Manny Acta lives to fight another day?

dc-off

  • In case your morning commute wasn’t already crappy, good luck driving through Adams Morgan today, what with all the street closures so Paul Rudd, Owen Wilson, and Reese Witherspoon can make some sort of romantic comedy about bureaucracy. (DCist)
  • Because we don’t already trust Google with enough information, the MPD has turned its sex offender registry into a Google Map. And it would appear that DC’s sex offenders, or “Members of Congress” as they are sometimes known, are advancing on the White House, where President Obama will destroy them, like flies. (Washington Post/Wikipedia/Discovery News)
  • Yesterday your Congress took some time out for the annual Congressional Baseball Game, what with all of our nation’s problems having been solved. Team Democrat defeated the GOP 15-10, revealing that both parties are better than the Nats. (Dallas Morning News)

Nats Fire St. Claire

Change is coming to the worst team in Major League Baseball, your Washington Nationals:

The Nationals today fired pitching coach Randy St. Claire, the longest-tenured member of their coaching staff, and have replaced him with Class AAA pitching coach Steve McCatty. St. Claire, in his seventh year with the organization, was responsible for the staff that currently has a 5.69 ERA, worst in baseball.

St. Claire said he was informed on Monday night about the decision. Today, he headed to Nationals Park to clear out his belongings. St. Claire said he didn’t receive an explanation for his firing, but added that he didn’t need one.

“The pitching isn’t performing up to where it needs to be to win, and I think a lot of factors go into it, but I guess I’m easier to replace than 12 guys,” he said. “Easier to replace and cheaper to replace. But that’s the game. When the team doesn’t perform, they’re bound to make changes.”

I feel a little bad for Randy St. Claire considering that he had a pitching staff with a bunch of rookies, but I still think this is a step in the right direction for the team. Now, how about firing Manny? That would be a Change We Can Believe In.

Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right B A Start

Well, in the past couple hours since I started paying attention here again (in between watching the Nats suffer yet another painful defeat), I’ve done a couple cool things. Like check out the logos on the video in this post (although I’d advise against actually hitting play on the video if you’re eating or drinking). Cool, right? Also fixed a few bugs in image display and some other things that were bothering me. And, of course, added the Twitter widget to the sidebar on the left.  The Twitter stole my Facebook status, somehow. Gotta figure out what I did to make the one update the other…

Also, for any nerds out there, try entering the Konami Code (in the title, click the mouse for Start) on either Facebook or Google Reader. Fun times!

Chris Matthews Respects the President

Liberal America haters booed President Bush at the Washington Nationals home opener. Chris Matthews is right to say that Bush “has a lot of guts” because “all politicians get booed.” Right on, Chris. Way to respect our president.

Freedom (of Speech) Isn’t Free

Dear President Bush,

As we loyal Americans all know, the president’s wartime powers under the Constitution gives the president the authority to do anything he feels necessary, even if it would otherwise be unconstitutional. There are some people in this country who, despite the fact that 9/11 changed everything, don’t realize that their hateful America-hating endangers our troops and strengthens the al Qaeda-Iran alliance. Therefore, I hope that you will use your unlimited constitutional wartime to authority to to rescind the following traitors’ right to freedom of speech:

Freedom isn’t free, not even freedom of speech. I hope you will take appropriate action against these haters.

Patriotically yours,

CrazyDrumGuy

Bush Booed at New Nationals Stadium

President Bush delivered the ceremonial first pitch at the Washington Nationals’ home opener in their new ballpark. The crowd start booing the second he stepped out of the dugout, and kept booing through the pitch until he was off the field. (Video below)

A Washington Post reader presciently asked why an Iraq War veteran wasn’t throwing out the pitch instead of the president, since “the veteran is far more deserving of the first-pitch honor than the president is.”
